Puerto Rican Food

While spending 3 days seeing the sights of Old San Juan, we tried some restaurants.

FATTIE'S
Fattie's features Jamaican, West Indies, and Soul Food. The day we went, the special was either "skirt steak" in creole sauce (which was melt in your mouth roast beef) or breaded fried chicken. With the special you also were served rice (yellow or white), stewed pinto beans, cooked potatoes and carrots, green plantain fritters, and a green salad.

CASA CORTES CHOCOBAR

One day in Old San Juan Diana had to have breakfast at the Casa Cortes ChocoBar. This restaurant is operated by the Cortes Family, a chocolate-producing family. Their restaurant features meals that incorporate chocolate. They are well known for their Chocolate Grilled Cheese sandwich. We thought $7 was a bit much for a grilled cheese sandwich. Instead, Stan got chocolate waffles and Diana got chocolate-vanilla pancakes. I have a feeling Diana will return to try the chocolate grilled cheese sandwich.

SIGLO XX

Later that same day we tried Siglo XX. The food was very good. Stan had the Cuban sandwich (ham, salami, pork, and cheese) and Diana had one of the lunch specials, steak in a mushroom sauce with rice and beans. The steak was a thin, tender slice of beef. Both of our meals were big portions. We were too full to eat again the rest of the day.

PUNTO DE VISTA RESTAURANT

On our third visit to Old San Juan, we tried Mofongo. It is mashed plantain that is fried and then filled with meats of your choice. We shared the shrimp one with garlic sauce at the restaurant on the 4th floor of Hotel Milano. The Mofongo was beautifully presented and we thought it was pretty good. Maybe the garlic hid the taste of the plantain.
